The world press photo competition has been running since 1955, annually highlighting the best in photo journalism.
Quote:The World Press Photo Contest Archive is an online resource offering a record not only of these overall winners, but of photos that have won prizes in all the various contest categories over the course of more than half a century. Today the annual contest attracts well over 5,000 participants from around 125 countries, who together send in upwards of 95,000 photos.

The site is a bit difficult to navigate - to see the photos, click on the "Years" link... but some amazing shots in there are definitely worth the time.
