Mirrorless vs DSLR Design - shuttertalk - Mar 14, 2012

Here's a great 8 minute video explaining in simple terms (and nice diagrams) the difference between mirrorless and DLSR designs, and the resulting effect on image quality.

One thing people usually talk about is the sensor size, and the resultant lack of noise with larger sensors. However, one thing often overlooked is the flange (lens mount) to sensor distance, which is obviously shorter for mirrorless cameras because they don't have to accommodate the whole mirror and prism mechanism. This allows for more simplified lens designs and should be less costly to produce as well.
