Thom Hogan and his views on the APS-C format - Pavel - Oct 13, 2012

In a few posts, I argued that APS-C based DSLRs like the DX format Nikons are squeezed out by the mirrorless cameras from below and full size sensor (FX) cameras from the top. Despite the fact that I was a long-term user of DX format Nikon D300 (and loving it), I argued that I would not recommend DSLRs based on DX format over the likes of Olympus OMD-EM5. Furthermore, I argued that if you need more of a camera than that, you should go for the FX cameras such as D600/D800.

Thom Hogan, whom I respect a lot argues that there is still a room for DX type DSLR http://www.bythom.com/index.htm (see "Emotional Arguments Versus Rational"). His point of view is more from a "market perspective", while mine is from "what would you recommend to a friend" perspective. I agree with some of his points but not with his conclusions. However, in deciding which way to go, you may want to consider his views before making a decision.
