Thanks for posting Jeff. It's good to share some of the simpler things that will help most but moreso those just starting their journey.

Not sure if these are available in the UK... Apple has some odd practices... but maybe have a look at these apps.:
"Photographers Tools,
"Pocket Scout" ,(Many times I have been out taken some great shots then can't remember how I found the location... this app helps with that but does nothing for any age related issues..Undecided )
"Lens Tutorial" Graphic and dynamic illustrations of DoF very easy for anyone to understand.
"Moon Phase" This one shows the phases of the moon... good if you are into Lunar photography.
"Star Walk 2" This will show you the night sky where you are... it is dynamic and will react to you pointing the phone at the night sky showing you what is above you ... planets satellites stars and constellations.

I use Photographers Ephemeris, Pocket Scout, and the last two as I also do a lot of night photography esp when the Aurora is putting on a display.
Kind regards
Rolf

Just a thought Jeff, being "over here" I have gotten to find US resources... some are very good... have a look at
http://www.adorama.com/alc/category/AdoramaTV

There are a lot of video presentations on a myriad of things photographic... for point and shooters, phone shooters and dslr users too.

I buy a lot of my gear from either Adorama of another NY Co. - B&H because they are way cheaper than Canada and I believe that they both ship to the UK. Worth a share?

Kind regards
Rolf
