I find the easiest way is upload the photos direct from my computer to the forum.
From Post A New Reply it is just a case of Choose File and Add Attachment. Once the images is loaded to the forum you will see an Inset Into Post. Hit that and it is there.

   

If you hit Preview Post you will only see an icon, but once you select Post Reply the image will be there.
I use JPEG 1400 x 900 for my posts. The forum resizes to a max of 916 pixels on the largest dimension.
