Which carry bag for Canon 400mm f2.8 - Gandalf1953 - Apr 13, 2018

Hi Everyone
I have just added a Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 USM (non IS) MkII to my photo gear, which came with a nice Canon "vanity" Case.
Nice for storing in the house but what do you suggest for taking the beast out and about. I have in mind a Think Tank (I love their cases) Streetwalker Pro V2 but I am not sure how practical it is with this lens so wondered if there were any alternatives out there.

In anticipation many thanks

I use one of these but the biggest is 32cm. I don't know how long your lens is.

Hi Graham,
Thanks for the suggestion but the lens measures 35cm by 17cm and weighs in at a mighty 12.5lbs or almost 6kg so I think it has to be a back pack of some sort.

Loewepro have back pack lens cases as well - go to the link I gave you above, and have a look.

Hi have a 300 f2.8 so know your problem these lenses are big and heavy. I use the Tamrac Expedition 9. Obviously it depends to some degree on what you will be doing. In my case I needed something I could use in rough ground conditions (even a field can be difficult for any wheeled unit) so a backpack/rucksack type is best for me. Obviously you will not only have just a lens so you need space for your other gear. Having a backpack is the best if you are carrying your gear as it distributes the load over both shoulders.

I use a Kata backpack for my 500.

If you want an individual bag just for the lens when needed, I got one of these especially for the sigma 300mm f2.8 including hood reversed and it fits a treat.

According to the spec its a little small for yours but of course the 17cm is the diameter and there is give in the sides.

Main thing if you go for single lens bag get a good strap.    I got this one and its brilliant as it is significantly more non slip than anything I ever tried, on the same side as the bag, or across the chest. https://i-stayput.com/pages/the-i-stay-non-slip-replacement-bag-strap

I've even replaced think tank straps with one :Smile   It seems to me lens weight increases exponentially with each mile you walk! - which is why I've now P/x'd the  lens for the Canon 100-400 mkII

Thank you Dave, but I think I will need the back pack rather than a lens specific case as I will have other gear too.
The Canon 100-400 mkII is a great lens and really versatile, I love mine!

Maybe a bit late in the day now however, I have a Manfrotto case which I got 2nd hand from Harrisons.
Its an ideal size for my Canon 100-400mm lens + camera and it also has 2 medium size side pockets.
It also has a decent strap so ideal for carrying around.
