i new to the scanning side of photo editing and have a quick question. if i have a 4x6 pic but eventually want to make it let's say 8x6... if i scan the 4x6 at a higher resolution will that help the quality of the 4x6 when i try to make it larger?

First off, welcome to Shuttertalk DPW.

When enlarging images you will always lose quality. The better the image you are scanning from the better the enlargment will be. If you have the option of scanning from a negative then you will have no problems with quality. Always scan at the highest resolution as possible. This will allow for you to make edits in a photo editing software much easier. Going from 4x6 to 8x10 you should get pretty good results as long as the scanned image is of good quality.
