Any tips for avoiding camera shake? Some people are able to handhold and shoot at speeds of below 1/(focal length) without IS...

For me I just grip my camera extra tight and squash it against my forehead to balance... Big Grin

(and then the lens pops out under the strain... hahah sorry, just watched spider man 2 last night... still got images of things busting and cars flying around my head)

find any object around that you can use as a tripod, ive even used bins.
Of if you square or something to position yourself at a lower position it also makes you more stable.

Get a good grip,
Hand under lens (if large) to support.
Maybe some added weight to the camera is believed to give stability.
Hold arms close to body.
Tuck your elbows in.
Get a good stance
Make yourself smaller
Take some drugs that'll make you stay still! hur hur hur

Hold still. rest on something stable, press on your head maybe,

Or use a tripod....

Is it worth buying lens with stabiliser?
Any advice would be much appreciated Big Grin

I hope to get a lens with stabiliser, it's rather expensive, but seems like a helpful thing to have. I've had no experience with it though. Just from what I've heard.
For hand-held shooting Smile~

I've never liked them. Overpriced, bulky brutes!

I'd personally recommend a good tripod, monopod, pillowpod and lateral-thinking-pod.

Sorry, please help out the "idiot" (aka me)... What's a monopod, pillowpod and later-thinking pod? Rolleyes

mono pod is like a stick that u put your camera on ...'
hence the mono ...
i think the rest he just made up ...
how about a chain pod ^_-

Avoiding camera shake - Rufus - Aug 10, 2004

Mono pod is as Peter says, but a pillow pod is simply a bean-bag, or sand bag. It shapes to the camera, and can be used not only to steady the camera, but actually as a temporary mount in some cases.
I wouldnt go out without one.... Seriously!

Avoiding camera shake - peter - Aug 11, 2004

OOO .. ive never thought of using sand bags..
i should do that ..

Avoiding camera shake - peter - Aug 11, 2004

haha .. i dont have credit card. ..
so its a pain for me since postage is an extra cost..
ill go scour the local camera shops ..

Avoiding camera shake - shuttertalk - Aug 11, 2004

Why not just use one of those wheat bags? You know the kind you heat up in the microwave? Looks just like one...

Avoiding camera shake - adam - Aug 11, 2004

Peter, go to the asian supermarket and buy a bag of rice... Actually, bags of rice are available everywhere! hur hur Smile

Avoiding camera shake - peter - Aug 11, 2004

Thanks Rufus... you're not just a pretty face hey! Big Grin

I'll search the local camera stores and website for similar product. If I can't find it then I'll order from that website.
