I've tried it and discarded it, I found the workflow horribly slow and the interface was very basic to me. I will admit this was well over a year ago, it may of improved in the last few months.

I heard good things about it, but never got around to really trying it..... What do you like about it?

Well, it's an awesome program overall.. A few things, specifically, that I like are that it is in seperate windows, and not one large dominating window. You can see your background, files, etc, behind it while you're using it. The interface is alot smaller, and easy to use once you get the hang out it. (Not too hard) It also comes with a ton of great tools and processes.

I have looked at Gimp - it definately looks good - but PhotoShop is the industry standard and everything that is 3rd party is done for it. Hard to switch if you already own it...

By the way, there's a project/hack to make GIMP look and work like photoshop. Why you ask? I suppose photoshop is a industry standard workflow, and GIMP is free. Best of both worlds!

I haven't tried it, but it looks mighty cool! For mac, windows and linux (redhat and debian)... oh and solaris too. :|

That's true Toad. If I had dropped a few hundred bucks on Photoshop, I probably wouldn't be partial to switching either..
Hmm, looks interesting shuttertalk. I'll have to check it out.

I've used the GIMP longer than I've used Photoshop.
Each has their strong and weak points.
If you can't afford PS the GIMP with the Photoshop make over is a good free alternative.

I wouldn't say non-intuitive - just different. If you're used to photoshop then anything else will be non-intuitive to you, until you get used to the other interface. I remember growing up with paint shop pro, and even now I scratch my head trying to find some things in photoshop...

Hi Lorraine, good on you for not being afraid to go down the open source path.
I think you may need to download the GTK toolkit as well, see:
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/faq.html
There's also a build from portableapps.com which has a complete package and allows you to install and run it directly from a USB key (so you can take it to any computer):

Hehe, I find it always helps if you've got something in mind, like a project to work on so you can search for help on techniques for exactly what you want to do.
Have fun!

I tried to download gimp and had trouble. The program wouldn't work because files were missing from the download. Do they make that download hard on purpose?

I had problems down-loading too until I try saving instead of run when it first starts the download. Then make sure you save as all files. Then close out, and go into my documents and install it and you need ufraw if you want to work with raw files.I would add the link but I don't know how.

Once you get your head around the interface its a good program, I used it for a couple of years before I got my copy of Photoshop.

Hi Don
If you go back to the same site that down-loaded Gimp
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html there is gimp help down load You can down load and install the same way.It will give you the choice of what language you want to use when you go to install. Then go into Gimp under preferances click gimp browser. It's nice to have the help files right there. It took me awhile to figure it out.
