Toronto Gathering: Saturday, August 9, 2008 - matthew - Aug 3, 2008
On Saturday, August 9 we will be holding a gathering of Toronto-area Shuttertalkers. (Shuttertalkists? Talkians?) Everyone is welcome to come out for a morning's shooting on the shores of Lake Ontario in the lovely town of Pickering.
Pavel has provided directions:
We will meet Saturday, August 9 at 8:30 AM at Pickering on a waterfront.
Driving instructions from Toronto: Go east on 401. Take Whites Rd. South exit and travel on this road until the first intersection with Bayly st. Turn left (East) and continue some distance until you reach Liverpool Rd. Turn right (south) on Liverpool and go all the way to the lake. If the weather is good, walk all the way to the lake and look for strange people with tripods. If the weather is poor, find the nearest overhang out of the rain and wait there. [note: I'd still be out in the rain acting like a fool. - matthew] Make your tripod visible.
In case of snow, the meeting is relocated to Florida.

I don't see any mention of food! No coffee or bagels? If this is Pavel's idea, there should at least be dumplings. Besides the fact that there is no promise of food, this is too far for me to drive from Philadelphia for the day. But I wish all the Toronto-based Shuttertalkians good weather and a wonderful time!

BAGELS? Nobody mentioned bagels before I decided to go elsewhere that day. Oh, well. Unlike photography, bagels are the one thing I know about. Besides, you can't get a good bagel outside of.....but that could be the subject of another thread.

There might be some timbits involved, but people will need to provide their own beverages. There's only so much I can carry. I'm going to be prioritizing lots of camera gear after all.

Do not bring anything Matthew. We must blend in with the natives and feed ourselves on whatever the Pickeringoas have to offer at this pre-harvest season (actually, we should do quite well. I visited some native commercial houses and ended up quite satisfied with local fair. Barbecued locusts in worm jelly were particulary tasty). Pavel

In a typical move for me, I've been planning and rethinking what gear I want to bring, but the idea of food never actually crossed my mind. (Hopefully I'll have my E-3 and 150 back from Sigma, and I can't see leaving my 7-14 or 35-100 at home, either.) Foraging for nuts and berries sounds good to me.

What sort of subjects are we likely to find there? Birds, wildlife, nuclear cooling towers...?
If its likely to rain, I'll switch out the Sigma for my 50-200, which adds up to a 566mm-equivalent when I add my teleconverter. That's about as long as my lenses get. Otherwise I'm not sure how much will fit in my bag, or even which bag I'll carry, or whether to use my tripod or monopod... :/

Cityscape and playgrounds (Pickering and Ajax), lakeshore vistas all along, marshlands and birds, sailboat club, views of distant nuclear station, distant Toronto views, landscapes involving abandoned gardens (around Pickering gone wild), boardwalk.
Happy hunting. You can bring long lens if you wish and pull it out of the trunk when needed, as I do not expect that we will be huge distances without car on this expedition. Pavel
