If you can swing for a D7000, I think, not sure, it can automatically focus those manual lenses. The low light performance of the newer cameras, more than megapixel count, is a strong reason to upgrade. I can put a 50 mm prime lens on my D5000 and not use a flash indoors, unless it's really dim. The 50 will open up to f/1.7 to let lots of light in. The D40 can't keep up in dim conditions.
