Shooting in Raw (Split Thread)
#11

(Nov 21, 2015, 08:28)MrB Wrote:  For JPEG shooters, the lesson to be reinforced from this is to get an image with suitable exposure. That is relatively easy to check and correct when shooting, by looking at the histogram on the camera's LCD to make sure that important highlights (like the steam in this shot) stay within the right hand side of the graph. If in doubt then bracket the exposure (e.g. -1, 0, +1 EVs), which a modern camera will shoot in a fraction of a second, and delete the unsuitable ones.
Bracketing is the way to go, but from the first of my 5 images in that sequence, to the last, while the train was in view, was a total of 10 seconds. Not a lot of room for bracketing and capturing 5 images at different zoom levels in 10 seconds. Certainly not with my camera. And not another steam loco passing by for the next three months!
I like what you have done with Paintshop Pro X6. What can you do with the first image?

Ask yourself, "What's most important for the final image?".
