I do agree that while the image quality isn't the absolute best on the S5000, it does produce pleasing images (just don't look too closely ). I think that it does apply too much compression, and there's no way to change that.
However, I purchased because of the other features (10x zoom, manual controls, etc.), and knowing full well of the limitations... so I'm a happy camper
