I saw that article make the rounds - it sounds well and good in theory, but I think it would hard pressed to change an industry that is so entrenched in JPG and GIFs. There are plenty of other superior formats that have been out - JPEG2000, PNG, DNG - but the old ones are still around.

I was actually hoping to see DNG being more universally adopted - it would make things much easier if different manufacturers would just play nice with each other.

I'm not so sure, remember that gif's in itself is a format started by one small company, many years ago. Compuserve, now owned by AOL.

Depends on how much they charge for using the format, they could do the usual MS trip of giving it away free to beat the competition.
