I'd like to buy an external flash to use with my Panny FZ10. The owner's manual (yes, I actually read it!) says something about only using flash units designed for use with digital cameras due to voltage differences... Is this just in the hopes I'll buy an expensive Panasonic product? I'd prefer to just go out and buya cheap used flash unit...

Hm... I googled a bit, and here's what our friends at dcresource say:
"Thanks to its hot shoe, the FZ10 also supports an external flash. Panasonic would be happy to sell you their PE-28S flash ($150), but you can use any standard flash with the camera."
Try to get one with a swivel head so you can bounce it off the roof
By the way, is your panny a black one?

yep, it's black... it would've been a 2-week wait for a silver one plus they discontinued the black one (I suppose because the FZ20 was on it's way). I actually like it better... silver screams 'point & shoot'!
re Flash: I suspected that the manual was just being over-cautious in the hopes you'd buy their stuff... thanks for the input.

No, not really. I've only used the Canon 550EX, so no experience.
Check here though:

Just make sure it's got tilt and swivel so that you can bounce it off ceilings and walls.
Check the wide end of the zoom as well - some of them are only 35mm so the flash may fall off at the edges (I think...)

I want to get a flash, but its quite hard deciding which one when I don't know why I need it: probably for fill flash when outdoors, and group pictures and things like that.
The sigma DG ST-500 DG (off memory, so may have got the name wrong) has similar features to that of canon 550EX, but a lot cheaper.
Or should I go for 420EX?
Quite hard when I don't have specific requirements, i just find the in-built flash sometimes a little too weak;
also, want a diffuser with it
The flash can get a little harshm giving me magical white rabbits with disgustingshadows
I'm sure (or have a feeling that) this was discussed earlier in another thread

Then I'll get a slave to carry it around (and operate) for me.
Peter can be my flash slave.
